Common reasons for increased usage include:
- Pressure washing or extensive outdoor water use
- Filling a pool (may qualify for a sewer adjustment once every 12 months)
- Leaks on the property (may qualify for a leak adjustment once every 12 months)
Toilet Leak Test:
Add 4–5 drops of food coloring to the toilet tank. Wait 20–30 minutes. If color appears in the bowl, the toilet is leaking.
Other Leak Checks:
- Inspect faucets, shower heads, and outdoor hose bibs (including by docks or garages).
- Check your water meter:
- Ensure no water is running.
- Observe the meter dial.
- If spinning, turn off your home’s main shutoff valve.
- Recheck the meter:
- If it stops, the leak is inside the house.
- If it continues spinning, the leak is likely underground between the meter and your shutoff valve.
Possible causes include:
- Non-payment disconnection: If your bill is past due, services may be disconnected. Pay the full past-due amount to restore service. Reconnection typically occurs by the end of the next business day.
- Check your main shutoff valve to ensure it is open.
- Main water line break: Visit the City’s Outage Map for updates.
