Fertilizer Restrictions Begin June 1
May 18, 2026
As the rainy season approaches, the City of Cape Coral reminds residents and businesses that seasonal fertilizer restrictions take effect June 1.
Under the City’s fertilizer ordinance, applying fertilizer containing phosphorus or nitrogen is prohibited from June 1 through September 30. These restrictions are designed to help protect Cape Coral’s canals and waterways, which play a vital role in the community’s quality of life and local economy.
When excess nutrients wash into stormwater systems and waterways, it can cause harmful algal blooms that can lead to fish kills and pose risks to pets, wildlife, and people who come into contact with affected water.
REMEMBER: During the remainder of the year (October-May), the percentage of slow-release nitrogen content in any fertilizer used must be at least 50 percent.

Cape Coral’s waterways are directly affected by the way yards are maintained. The City’s Florida Friendly Landscaping and Go Native programs encourage simple, environmentally responsible practices that conserve water, reduce chemical runoff, and support local wildlife while helping protect canals, aquifers, and estuaries. Native landscaping also strengthens hurricane resilience by stabilizing soil, reducing erosion, and improving stormwater absorption. Adapted to local conditions, native plants are less likely to fail in high winds, lowering debris risks while supporting long-term ecosystem health.
