A Historic Day for Cape Coral: City Council Approves Transformative Developments

August 8, 2024

August 7, 2024, marks a momentous day in the history of Cape Coral as the City Council approved three landmark initiatives that will transform the city’s landscape and propel it into a new era of growth and prosperity.

In a decisive and visionary move, the City Council approved the purchase and development of three major sites that will redefine the future of Cape Coral. These include the acquisition of nearly 19 acres in the Community Redevelopment Area (CRA) District, the purchase of the long-vacant former golf course, and the approval of the Cape Coral Grove development in the northwest part of the city. Together, these projects represent a bold step forward in the city’s ongoing efforts to enhance community vibrancy, attract new businesses, and provide residents with modern amenities.

Council Approves 19-Acre Purchase in CRA District to Revitalize South Cape

The Council’s approval of Resolution 235-24, which encompasses the purchase of 43 parcels south of Cape Coral Parkway between Tarpon Court and Coronado Parkway, marks a significant investment in the city’s future. This nearly 19-acre site will be the cornerstone of a comprehensive redevelopment project aimed at revitalizing the South Cape area.

“We are committed to breathing new life into South Cape,” said Cape Coral Mayor John Gunter. “This purchase is not just about acquiring land; it’s about building a vibrant, connected community space that reflects the future of Cape Coral.”

Council Approves Purchase of Former Golf Course in CRA District

Resolution 260-24 authorized the purchase of 175 acres north of Cape Coral Parkway along Palm Tree Boulevard, a site that was previously a golf course. Since its closure in 2006, the land has been a source of blight in the community. The redevelopment of this property will address long-standing concerns and open the door to exciting new possibilities.

“Today’s vote is a win for our entire community,” stated Mayor John Gunter. “By transforming this area, we are eliminating blight, creating new opportunities, and showcasing the strength and resilience of Cape Coral.”

Council Approves Cape Coral Grove Development in NW Cape

The approval of Ordinance 64-24 for the Cape Coral Grove development represents a groundbreaking moment for the city’s northwest corridor. This mixed-use project, located on a 131-acre lot on Pine Island Road between Chiquita Boulevard and Burnt Store Road, is expected to have a $1.3 billion economic impact. The development plan includes a variety of retail spaces, entertainment venues, a hotel, and luxury apartments and townhomes, all of which will contribute to Cape Coral’s reputation as a premier destination for living, working, and playing.

“The Cape Coral Grove development is a testament to our city’s commitment to partnering with forward-thinking developers,” said City Manager, Michael Ilczyszyn. “This project will not only enhance the quality of life for our residents but will also attract new visitors and businesses, further solidifying Cape Coral as a dynamic and thriving community.”

Ilczyszyn added, “Today, we have laid the foundation for the future of Cape Coral. These projects will redefine our city and ensure that Cape Coral remains a place where opportunities flourish.”
