City of Cape Coral Launches “Raise the Flag” Fundraiser to Celebrate America’s 250th Birthday

November 6, 2025

The City of Cape Coral is launching the “Raise the Flag” fundraiser—a project to build the tallest, free-standing American flagpole in Florida, funded entirely by community donations, to mark the United States’ 250th birthday, which is next year.

This flag will sit on a 250-foot pole at Bernice Braden Park, a visible tribute to the ideals of freedom, democracy, and unity we have. It is also a reminder of the sacrifices made by the people who have served and those who are serving our country. Every dollar raised will go directly to making this project happen, with support from residents, businesses, and anyone who believes in what the flag stands for.

City Manager Michael Ilczyszyn, who first brought this idea forward, said, “When I understood I had the privilege to be the city manager as America celebrates 250 years, I thought, ‘We need to celebrate big.’ I remembered seeing a colossal flag while serving in the U.S. Navy that really stuck with me. That experience made me want to do something special here in Cape Coral. This isn’t just about a flagpole — it’s about showing how much we care about our country, our freedoms, and each other. It’s up to all of us to unify and get it done for our country and Southwest Florida.”

Tax-deductible donations can be made at CapeCoral.gov/RaisetheFlag. Everyone is welcome to join in supporting a project that will mean a lot to Cape Coral, now and for future generations.
