(January 19, 2024)-- On January 16th, 2024, around 12 p.m., officers working for the Cape Coral Police Department, responded to the report of a domestic violence incident.
Officers met with the victim, who advised that her ex-boyfriend, Robert Johnson (W/M 09/17/1987), had battered her. The victim stated that a few days prior, she and Mr. Johnson returned to her residence after dinner. The victim did not like his demeanor and left. When the victim returned home, Mr. Johnson was still there and began yelling at her. During the argument, the victim attempted to leave by running toward the front door. Mr. Johnson pushed her back, locked the door, and stood in the entryway, preventing the victim from leaving.
The victim decided to separate from Mr. Johnson by sleeping in a different bedroom. Mr. Johnson entered the bedroom with a knife and threatened to kill her dog if she did not lay in bed with him. The victim went into bed with Mr. Johnson, and he started to choke her from behind. The victim struggled, and they ended up on the floor. Mr. Johnson got on top of her and started to choke her with both his hands around her throat. The victim was unable to breathe and felt like she was going to lose consciousness. Mr. Johnson let go of her throat and started to punch her in the face.
Mr. Johnson let the victim go, and she got up and said she was going to call the police. Mr. Johnson took the phone from the victim’s hand and prevented her from calling.
Due to fear of being hurt, the victim laid back in bed with Mr. Johnson and they went to sleep. Mr. Johnson left the residence that morning.
The victim had multiple visible injuries to include a black eye, swollen cheek, and redness on her neck.
Officers later responded to Robert Johnson’s address. Officers made contact with him and the investigation revealed that Robert Johnson strangled and battered the victim, prevented her from calling 911, and falsely imprisoned her by refusing to let her leave her residence.
Robert Johnson was arrested and charged with the following:
--1 count in violation of F.S.S. 784.041(2)(a) Domestic Battery by Strangulation
--1 count in violation of F.S.S. 787.02 False Imprisonment
--1 Count in violation of F.S.S. 914.22 (1e) Hinder communication when attempting to contact Law Enforcement
