DUI Crash with Child in the Car Results in Arrest

(December 13,2023)--On Tuesday, December 12, 2023, at approximately 9:35 p.m., officers with the Cape Coral Police Department were dispatched to the 4300 block of Chiquita Boulevard South, Cape Coral, Florida for reports of a crash.

The crash investigation revealed that the at-fault driver, later identified as Kylie Nicole Hughes (W/F DOB 06/21/1979), was crossing traffic headed Northbound on Chiquita from Southwest 43rd Street. Hughes pulled out in front of another vehicle, causing that vehicle to swerve, and hit a mailbox and a tree. The passenger of that vehicle was taken to the hospital with injuries.

Officers determined that Hughes was showing major signs of impairment and conducted standardized field sobriety evaluations which resulted in a poor performance. A sample of her breath revealed that Hughes was FOUR TIMES over the legal limit.

It should also be noted that Hughes had a child under 18 in the car at the time of the crash.

Kylie Hughes was arrested and taken to the Lee County Jail on the following charges:

1 count F.S.S. 316.193(4) for DUI with a person under 18 years old in the vehicle.
