Juvenile Dies in Traffic Crash

(September 11, 2023) – On September 9, 2023, at approximately 2:11 p.m., officers from the Cape Coral Police Department responded to a traffic accident at Academy Boulevard and West Retunda Parkway. Major Crash Investigators responded to the scene. The synopsis of the crash from the Major Crash Investigator is as follows:

VEHICLE 1:   2014 gray Hyundai Sonata, Florida tag

DRIVER 1:   Arnoldo Cruz Tamayo, H/M, 08/14/1990, of Cape Coral. 

DRIVER 1 INJURIES:  Cruz Tamayo suffered no injuries in the traffic crash. 

 

SCOOTER: Black/red Evercross Electric Scooter.

 

PEDESTRIAN 1: Juvenile Male of Cape Coral

PEDESTRIAN 1 INJURIES: The juvenile suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash.

 

SYNOPSIS: 

 

Vehicle 1 was south on Academy Blvd, approaching the intersection of W Retunda Pkwy.

Pedestrian 1 was riding his black/red Evercross Electric Scooter west on W Retunda Pkwy, approaching the intersection of Academy Blvd.

At this intersection, traffic on Academy Blvd has the right of way. W Retunda Pkwy has stop signs as well as yellow signs just below the stop signs that state “Cross Traffic Does Not Stop”.

Pedestrian 1 entered the intersection into the path of Vehicle 1. The front right bumper of Vehicle 1 impacted the right side of Pedestrian 1 and the scooter. Pedestrian 1 went up onto the hood, and his head impacted the A-pillar of Vehicle 1 on the passenger side. The scooter went under the front of Vehicle 1, was dragged for approximately 50 feet, and came to final rest in the southbound travel lane of Academy Blvd, on the south side of the intersection. Pedestrian 1 was thrown to the southwest, approximately 75 feet, and into the front/side yard of 630 W Retunda Pkwy, where he came to final rest. After impact and separation from the scooter, Vehicle 1 came to a stop in the right turn lane, approximately 200 feet south of the area of impact.

Pedestrian 1 was not wearing a helmet and sustained life-threatening injuries. Pedestrian 1 was transported, via ambulance, to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased shortly thereafter.

The driver of Vehicle 1 suffered no injuries as a result of the traffic crash.

Traffic Homicide Investigators, detectives, and a victim advocate responded to the scene.

Alcohol/drugs ARE NOT a factor in this traffic crash. Speed IS NOT a factor in this crash. Next-of-kin HAVE BEEN notified.

The Traffic Homicide Unit deployed the Leica RTC360 scanner and laser-mapped the scene of the incident.
