Two Drivers Die in Separate Weekend Crashes

(June 19, 2023) - On June 16, 2023, at approximately 8:12 p.m. Officers from the Cape Coral Police Department responded to a traffic accident at 1700-block of Southwest Pine Island Road . Major Crash Investigators responded to the scene. The synopsis of the crash from the Major Crash Investigator is as follows:

TIME:    11:23 p.m. 

LOCATION:  1700-block Southwest Pine Island Road 

CR#:  23-014801 

ASSIGNED THI: Investigator George Schwigk   

VEHICLE 1:    2004 gold Cadillac DTS. 

DRIVER 1:  Dmitriy Simankin (W/M, 08-05-1969, of Lehigh Acres).

DRIVER 1 INJURIES:   Simankin suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash.   

VEHICLE 2:  2019 white Toyota Corolla.

DRIVER 2:  Justin Anthony Malanga (W/M, 07-01-2003 of Cape Coral). 

DRIVER 2 INJURIES:   Malanga suffered initial life-threatening injuries in the traffic crash.   

SYNOPSIS:   

Vehicle 1 was east on Southwest Pine Island Road, in the inside westbound lane, approaching Chiquita Boulevard.  

Vehicle 2 was west on Southwest Pine Island Road, in the inside westbound lane, just west of Chiquita Boulevard. 

The front bumper of Vehicle 1 impacted the front bumper of Vehicle 2 in this head-on collision. After impact, Vehicle 1 continued east, in the westbound inside lane, for approximately 30 feet and came to final rest partially in the center median, facing east. Vehicle 2 was redirected to the northeast approximately 39 feet and rotated 180 degrees, where it came to final rest in the outside westbound lane of Southwest Pine Island Road, facing east.  

The driver of Vehicle 1 was pinned in the vehicle and, once extricated, was taken as a Trauma Arrest to a local hospital via ambulance, where he died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. The driver of Vehicle 2's injuries were later downgraded to non-life-threatening. 

This traffic crash IS alcohol/drug related. Speed is an UNKNOWN factor in this crash. Next-of-kin HAVE BEEN notified.  

The Traffic Homicide Unit deployed the Leica RTC360 scanner and laser-mapped the scene of the incident.

DATE:    June 18th, 2023   

TIME:    9:04 p.m.

LOCATION:   326 Kismet Parkway West

ASSIGNED THI:    Investigator Stephen Leonard

VEHICLE 1:    2000 Beige Toyota Corolla. 

DRIVER 1:   Pablo Rene Perez Viera (W/M, 06-06-1964 of Cape Coral)

DRIVER 1 INJURIES:   Pablo Rene Perez Viera suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash.  

VEHICLE 2:    2006 White International 4300 DT466 Box Truck. 

SYNOPSIS:   

Vehicle 1 east on Kismet Parkway West at the 400 block. 

Vehicle 2 was parked with its hazard lights on and unoccupied in the outside right travel lane in front of 326 Kismet Parkway West while unloading furniture. 

Vehicle 1 failed to slow down and move over for the parked vehicle and the front bumper crashed into the rear of Vehicle 2. 

The driver of Vehicle 1 sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken as a Trauma Alert to Gulf Coast Hospital via ambulance, where he died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. 

This traffic crash IS alcohol/drug related. Speed is NOT a factor in this crash. Next-of-kin HAVE BEEN notified.
