Parks & Recreation Receives State Excellence Award for Environmental Sustainability

Agency Excellence AwardThe City of Cape Coral Parks & Recreation Department recently received a 2015 Agency Excellence Award for Environmental Sustainability from the Florida Recreation and Park Association (FRPA).

The Association’s Agency Excellence Award recognizes and honors the state’s most outstanding community Park, Recreation and/or Leisure Service agencies for excellence in Parks and Recreation management. An Agency Excellence Award is the highest honor an agency can receive at the state level, with the Cape Coral Parks and Recreation Department being one of only two agencies statewide to receive the award this year.

To qualify for this prestigious award, an extensive application was submitted to illustrate the importance of environmental sustainability to the City of Cape Coral, show how the Cape Coral Parks and Recreation Department has successfully integrated this environmental focus into its parks, facilities, programs, planning, administration, training, and citizen/partner involvement, and demonstrate the positive impact that these environmental efforts have had on the community.

Achievements highlighted in the award application ranged from enhancements to Sirenia Vista Park and Cape Coral’s other environmental parks to the recent addition of 90+ miles of interconnected bicycle routes to the implementation of energy saving measures at recreation facilities. In addition, the abundance of nature, gardening, kayaking and other environmental programs and events being offered, as well as strong community partnerships with volunteer and citizen organizations such as the Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife and Rotary Club, were showcased to emphasize the department’s commitment to excellence and environmental sustainability.

“We are extremely pleased to be honored with the Florida Recreation and Park Association’s 2015 Agency Excellence Award for Environmental Sustainability,” said Steve Pohlman, Cape Coral Parks & Recreation Director. “Our team works very hard throughout the year to not only provide a wide range of recreational opportunities and quality parks for citizens of all ages, interests and economic capabilities, but to do so in a manner that is conscious of the environmental impact. It is a terrific achievement to be recognized for these efforts and acclaimed as one of the best Parks and Recreation Departments in the state of Florida.”

The Agency Excellence Award for Environmental Sustainability was officially presented on September 3 at the Florida Recreation and Park Association’s Annual Awards Ceremony in Orlando.
