Driver Dies After Traffic Crash

(May 22, 2023) - On May 19, 2023, at approximately 6:12 a.m. Officers from the Cape Coral Police Department responded to a traffic accident at Skyline Boulevard/ SW 8th Terrace. Major Crash Investigators responded to the scene. The synopsis of the crash from the Major Crash Investigator is as follows:

VEHICLE 1: 2013 Chrysler 300.
VEHICLE 1 DRIVER: Mallelin Y Rodriguez, DOB 08/24/1988 of Cape Coral. 
VEHICLE 1 DRIVER INJURIES: Rodriguez suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the crash.
VEHICLE 1 PASSENGER: Genesis D Graneva, DOB 12/05/2007 of Cape Coral. 
VEHICLE 1 PASSENGER INJURIES: Graneva did not suffer any injuries in the crash.

VEHICLE 2: 2008 Nissan Versa.
VEHICLE 2 DRIVER: Yudeysi Moreno-Blanco, DOB 03/04/1986 of  Cape Coral. 
VEHICLE 2 DRIVER INJURIES: Moreno-Blanco died from the injuries she sustained in the crash.
VEHICLE 2 PASSENGER: Alexei Miranda Nieves, DOB 01/26/1990 of Cape Coral. 
VEHICLE 2 PASSENGER INJURIES: Nieves suffered serious bodily injuries in the crash that were downgraded to non-life-threatening.

SYNOPSIS:

Vehicle 1 was traveling westbound on SW 8th Ter approaching the intersection of Skyline Blvd. Vehicle 1 had a stop sign.

Vehicle 2 was traveling northbound on Skyline Blvd in the inside travel lane approaching the intersection of SW 8th Ter. Vehicle 2 did not have a stop sign.

Vehicle 1 entered the intersection with the intention of making a left turn onto Skyline Blvd and pulled out directly in front of Vehicle 2.

The front bumper of Vehicle 2 struck the left front quarter panel of Vehicle 1. The impact caused both vehicles to rotate clockwise, and both traveled in a north direction post-crash. While rotating, Vehicle 2 overturned on its left side and struck a concrete street light pole that was in the center median. Vehicle 1 came to final rest in the center median facing southwest. Vehicle 2 came to final rest on its left side (driver side) facing northeast.   

Both the driver and passenger of Vehicle 2 were transported via helicopter to Gulf Coast Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. The passenger’s injuries were downgraded to non-life-threatening, the driver died at the hospital from the injuries sustained in the crash.

The driver of Vehicle 1 sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the crash and was transported to Cape Coral Hospital for treatment. Vehicle 1’s passenger did not sustain any injuries.

Speed is NOT a factor in this crash. Next-of-kin HAVE BEEN notified.

The Traffic Homicide Unit deployed the Leica RTC360 scanner and laser-mapped the scene of the incident.
