Bicyclist Dies After Being Struck by Vehicle.

(January 24, 2023) - On January 23, 2023, at approximately 5:09 p.m. Officers from the Cape Coral Police Department responded to a vehicle versus pedestrian traffic accident at the intersection of Del Prado Blvd S/ SE 4th Street. Major Crash Investigators responded to the scene. The synopsis of the crash from the Major Crash Investigator is as follows:

VEHICLE 1:    2020 blue Dodge Challenger, Florida tag# QFBC86

DRIVER 1:    Marvin Lyndale Tory, B/M, 07/06/1988, 867 Oleander Avenue, Fort Myers, Florida, 33916.  

DRIVER 1 INJURIES:   Tory suffered no injuries in the traffic crash.  

BICYCLE 1: Camouflage E-cells Super Monarch Crown electric bicycle.

BICYCLIST: John Stephen Kopins, W/M, 03/07/1956, 1932 Southeast 6th Lane, Cape Coral, Florida, 33990.

BICYCLIST INJURIES: Kopins suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash.

SYNOPSIS:

Vehicle 1 was south on Del Prado Boulevard S, in the middle lane, approaching the intersection of Southeast 4th Street.

Bicycle 1 was in the northbound left turn lane of Del Prado Boulevard S, at the intersection of Southeast 4th Street.

Bicycle 1 turned left into the path of Vehicle 1. The front right bumper of Vehicle 1 impacted the right side of Bicycle 1. The bicyclist was ejected from Bicycle 1 and slid approximately 27 feet to the southwest where he came to final rest up against the curb, on the west side of the roadway, just south of the intersection. Bicycle 1 broke into several pieces and was thrown to the southwest. The frame and rear wheel struck a light pole approximately 60 feet southwest of the point of impact where it broke apart and came to final rest. Vehicle 1 traveled approximately 140 feet after impact before coming to final rest in the middle lane of Del Prado Boulevard S, facing south.

The bicyclist was not wearing a helmet and sustained life-threatening injuries. Life saving measures were attempted on scene by officers and witnesses. The bicyclist was transported, via ambulance, to Cape Coral Hospital where he was pronounced deceased shortly thereafter.

The driver of Vehicle 1 suffered no injuries as a result of the traffic crash.

This traffic crash IS NOT alcohol/drug related. Speed IS NOT a factor in this crash. Next-of-kin HAVE BEEN notified.

The Traffic Homicide Unit deployed the Leica RTC360 scanner and laser-mapped the scene of the incident.
